PaperSpecs on The Art of Digital Edge Printing & Painting: A Fresh Take on a Classic Technique

Edge painting is a timeless finishing technique that’s making a strong comeback in the print design world. At the same time, modern methods like digital edge printing and edge gilding are gaining popularity for their ability to add vibrant color and refined detail to the edges of printed materials.

In a recent PaperSpecs webinar, print design expert Sabine Lenz explored the resurgence of these edge-enhancing techniques, demonstrating how each one can add depth, texture, and visual intrigue to everything from business cards and invitations to high-end books.

Once considered a niche embellishment, edge painting and its modern alternatives, digital edge printing and edge gilding, are being embraced by designers and brands in 2025 as a bold way to create standout print pieces. Whether you’re aiming for a classic, luxurious feel or a modern, eye-catching finish, edge painting and its contemporary counterparts offer versatile ways to elevate your printed designs.

Here’s what you need to know about each method—and how to choose the right one for your next print project.

Edge Painting: A Classic Hand-Finished Look

COST: $

Edge painting typically adds approximately 10-20% to the project cost.

Edge painting, sometimes referred to as airbrushing, is the most widely available technique for adding color to the edges of printed materials. This process involves stacking printed and cut pieces tightly together using a jig, then spray painting the exposed edges one side at a time. Water-based engraving inks, which are denser and more opaque than traditional offset inks, ensure a vibrant and long-lasting result.

Colors can be precisely matched to PMS (Pantone Matching System) shades, making it a great choice for brand consistency.

Edge painting works best with heavier cardstock—typically 160 lb and up—to fully showcase the painted effect. While edge painting can be done on thinner papers, the thicker the stock, the more dramatic the effect.

Digital Edge Printing: A Modern, High-Volume Alternative

COST: $$

Digital edge printing typically increases costs by 20-30%.

Digital edge printing is a newer technique that is gaining traction in North America due to its efficiency and versatility. Unlike traditional edge painting and gilding, digital edge printing is fully automated, making it an ideal option for industrial-scale production runs of 500 to 5,000 pieces. This method is especially effective for intricate designs, enabling the application of complex patterns or even full-color images along the edges of cards and books.

This process utilizes inkjet printing with CMYK ink applied to all four sides of the piece. While it cannot achieve exact PMS color matches, it offers vibrant, high-quality results with CMYK equivalents.

Edge Gilding: The Ultimate Luxury Finish

COST: $$$

The most expensive option, adding anywhere from 30-90% to a project’s cost due to the specialized labor involved.

Edge gilding is the most premium and labor-intensive of the three techniques, offering a metallic sheen that exudes sophistication. This process begins by clamping paper pieces together and smoothing them down to create a flawless surface. A thin layer of metallic foil is then applied, giving the edges a stunning reflective quality.

Edge gilding is commonly used for wedding invitations, but businesses are increasingly incorporating it into books and high-end business cards to create an air of exclusivity.

Due to the specialized nature of gilding, only a handful of experts in North America offer this service. Many printers outsource edge gilding, which can extend turnaround times (and costs).

Is Edge Finishing Right for Your Project?

Edge finishing techniques are an excellent way to create visually striking print materials that stand out. Whether you’re looking for a cost-effective color accent with edge painting, a digitally printed design for high-volume orders, or a luxury gilded finish, these methods can help elevate your print project.
