Edge painting, sometimes referred to as airbrushing, is the most widely available technique for adding color to the edges of printed materials. This process involves stacking printed and cut pieces tightly together using a jig, then spray painting the exposed edges one side at a time. Water-based engraving inks, which are denser and more opaque than traditional offset inks, ensure a vibrant and long-lasting result.
Colors can be precisely matched to PMS (Pantone Matching System) shades, making it a great choice for brand consistency.
Edge painting works best with heavier cardstock—typically 160 lb and up—to fully showcase the painted effect. While edge painting can be done on thinner papers, the thicker the stock, the more dramatic the effect.

Digital edge printing is a newer technique that is gaining traction in North America due to its efficiency and versatility. Unlike traditional edge painting and gilding, digital edge printing is fully automated, making it an ideal option for industrial-scale production runs of 500 to 5,000 pieces. This method is especially effective for intricate designs, enabling the application of complex patterns or even full-color images along the edges of cards and books.
This process utilizes inkjet printing with CMYK ink applied to all four sides of the piece. While it cannot achieve exact PMS color matches, it offers vibrant, high-quality results with CMYK equivalents.
Edge Gilding: The Ultimate Luxury Finish

The most expensive option, adding anywhere from 30-90% to a project’s cost due to the specialized labor involved.
Edge gilding is the most premium and labor-intensive of the three techniques, offering a metallic sheen that exudes sophistication. This process begins by clamping paper pieces together and smoothing them down to create a flawless surface. A thin layer of metallic foil is then applied, giving the edges a stunning reflective quality.
Edge gilding is commonly used for wedding invitations, but businesses are increasingly incorporating it into books and high-end business cards to create an air of exclusivity.
Due to the specialized nature of gilding, only a handful of experts in North America offer this service. Many printers outsource edge gilding, which can extend turnaround times (and costs).
